Abstract

This qualitative study using phenomenological approach would like to determine the story behind truancy: the case of high school students. The researchers chose four participants for the study. These participants were considered because they were identified as truant students in their school. In the gathering of data, the researchers used the following: narrative through writing, one on one interview, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Data gathered were analyzed and interpreted using the 5 steps of John Creswell. The result showed that truancy has many causes external and internal, and the story behind truancy among the participant shared one common theme: getting away or evasion. This theme frames the overarching reason among competing reasons which describes their story about truancy. The essence of their story is that they do it for freedom and enjoyment.
